Wal-Mart is one of largest retailers in the world. Prices are incredibly low, making consumer purchases high. Yet these low prices come with another price all together; gender discrimination, extremely poor working conditions and minimal workers rights, increases in taxes and decreases in wages. The Duke VS. Walmart class action lawsuit clearly shows gender discrimination in the workplace ( ). This case shows that men were five and a half times as likely as women to be promoted into salaried, management positions. Is this something we want to support? Is our groceries being slightly cheaper worth promoting this discrimination to take place. I think NOT. Wal-Mart is known for having very poor wages and working conditions. Wheres the governmental regulation? The horrid working conditions of Wal-Mart has gone ignored for too long. There are cases of workers hours being erased off of their timesheets because Wal-Mart dident want to pay them for full-time hours, but had them working at that rate. Our government should not let atrocities like this take place, yet it does. Why? Big businesses and politicians sleep in the same bed, that’s why. Workers rights are simply that....RIGHTS! With a lack of workers rights we humans are degraded to the level of animals valued only off a utilitarianistc calculation. Workers should have the right to form a union, but Wal-Mart disallows that. Employees should be given a livable wage, but Wal-Marts average pay is below the poverty level. In fact “Walmart’s average wage of $11.75/hour translates into annual pay of $20,7744. This is almost 6% below the Federal Poverty Level of $22,050 for a family of four” ( ). Also Wal-Mart dosent offer reasonably priced or available health care to it's employees, making theses employees depend upon the state. Wal-Mart effects people who don't even shop there. Because Wal-Mart doesn’t offer health care, it's employees are forced to use taxpayer money to have health care. In Ohio, the number of employees of Wal-Mart reliant upon Medicare cost the state $44.8 MILLION in 2009! Wal-Mart robs taxpayers of their money, because even though they are one of the largest retailers in the world they feel the need to be greedy and not offer benefits to their employees. The economic incentive to shop at Wal-Mart for is constant low prices should be over-shadowed by the amount of money shopping there will really cost you in the future in the form of your taxes. So tell me, dear blog reader, how do you view Wal-Mart?
