Upper Michigan’s 28,0000 square miles includes a very large amount of wetlands, without a doubt, the anticipated tangible results of this study represent a model for economic success in many other communities with a willingness for all stakeholders to work together.

Absent a Statewide land use plan, the Sault Ste. Marie SARMI effort represents a prudent method to continue the team effort begun during the WalMart permitting process. Ultimately, such long-range planning will optimize the time, effort and money, spent by MDEQ, the City, and developers on evaluation of development proposals within the City limits. In Michigan’s current bleak economic climate, this planning effort is a welcome boost to the economy of Sault Ste. Marie and the State through the production of jobs, tax revenue, and the synergy created by establishing a regional shopping location.

Moyle and other developers, that represent millions of dollars of revenue and hundreds of jobs, had been watching the progress of the WalMart permitting process. The City of Sault Ste. Marie, anxious to maintain momentum, but recognizing the need to reduce the regulatory permitting timeframe, initiated a pilot project known as the Sprawl Avoidance and Resource Management Initiative. The goal of the SARMI pilot project is to achieve a balance between resource management and development, resulting in a shorter MDEQ wetland regulatory process.

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI -  Monday, March 30, 2009 - The City of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan received its own “economic stimulus package” in October, 2007 with the issuance of an MDEQ permit to construct a Super WalMart within the city. The project is the culmination of eighteen months of effort by the City, Moyle Real Estate & Development, Wal-Mart, Ron Brown & Associates, and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The cooperative efforts of all these organizations and individuals resulted in a permit authorizing wetland impact and a unique wetland mitigation project to preserve over 80 acres of valuable wetland habitat. Moyle Construction is in the process of building the new WalMart Super Center, which will be one of the largest in the State of Michigan and is slated to open for business in July 2009.
